Pay men teachers
Dear Editor,
Good mathematics and science teachers can be found in Jamaica. But a lot of good and potentially good ones are not in the classroom. They are to be found in businesses and different industries (other than education). To get them into classrooms, we have to make up our mind to pay them at a premium.
Another consideration – and we must face this fact – is that mathematics and science are predominantly a male domain. It’s not surprising that the teaching of mathematics and science went downhill with the exodus of men teachers from the classrooms. After all, males are still the leading breadwinners, but they cannot be respected, not even at home with a stipend. Our women are demanding, let’s stop the pretence.
