Let’s make it 10 years of Freedom Street
Dear Editor,
Freedom Street, the Vybz Kartel event, was clearly the greatest dancehall show ever to be staged in Jamaica. It was clearly the most expensive concert and the largest, in terms of crowd size, to be held at the National Stadium.
The question from many is: Can Vybz Kartel do it again? Most will argue that he got a huge crowd because this is the first time in 13 years fans of his music have seen him perform live.
I think another such event should be held this year but at a cheaper cost, and on a day of the year other than December 31. It will be good for dancehall music to have at least over 40,000 fans at the National Stadium annually. The Downsound Entertainment team can improve on production annually.
If I were Vybz Kartel’s manager I would ensure that Freedom Street is an annual concert for the next 10 years. The show doesn’t have to be headlined by Vybz Kartel but by his current and future protégés.
For the sake of dancehall music, I hope this event will be held for the next 10 years.
