Naturalzista Hair founder Ashley Thomas ditched corporate stability for passion
Walking away from a stable 9-5 in Jamaica felt like stepping off a cliff. But for Ashley Thomas, the greater risk wasn’t the unknown, it was staying stuck in a job that stifled her creativity. Taking that leap wasn’t easy, but today she’s turning her side hustle into a thriving international brand.
For four years, Thomas navigated the structured world of finance, securing stability in a traditional white collar job. Yet, despite the steady paycheck, something was missing—her passion. While crunching numbers paid the bills, it didn’t feed her soul. In search of a creative outlet, she turned her attention to haircare — experimenting with faux locs, textures, and styles.
“It started as something just for me,” Thomas recalled. “I wanted a natural look that felt like my own hair, but I couldn’t find exactly what I envisioned. So, I decided to create it myself.”
What began as a personal project soon gained traction among friends and family. Encouraged by their support, she took the bold step of turning her side hustle into a full-fledged business. Through dedication, craftsmanship, and a keen eye for detail, her handmade faux locs brand, Naturalzista Hair, is now making waves across the globe, celebrated for its high-quality, handcrafted styles.
But the journey was far from smooth. Thomas faced countless hurdles, from sourcing the right materials to managing production.
“There were nights when I questioned everything,” she admitted. “I would sit up wondering if I made the right decision, but deep down, I knew I couldn’t go back.”
Social media played a crucial role in her success, helping her connect with clients across continents and position her brand as a leader in the natural hair space. Her work has attracted customers from as far as the United States, United Kingdom and Africa, proving that passion and perseverance can build an international brand from anywhere.
“I had to learn how to market myself online,” she explained. “From Instagram to TikTok, I made sure my brand had a strong presence. I also invested in a website so customers could easily find and purchase my products. That changed everything.”
Thomas is not just an entrepreneur, but also an inspiration to others seeking to break free from conventional career paths.
“I always tell people, trust yourself,” she said. “If you have a vision, go after it, even if it scares you.”
Her story is proof that the boldest leaps often lead to the most extraordinary destinations.
