JPL leaders score wins to kick off third round
ST ANN, Jamaica — The top three teams all scored wins as the first set of of games in the third round of the Jamaica Premier League ended on Thursday.
Fabian Reid scored two late goals as second-placed Arnett Gardens hammered Chapelton Maroons 5-0 at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex while leaders Mt Pleasant FA and third-placed Montego Bay United scored 1-0 wins over Waterhouse FC and Harbour View respectively.
Humble Lion moved off the foot of the tables after outscoring Tivoli Gardens 3-2 for their second win in three starts.
At Drax Hall, Mt Pleasant FA edged Waterhouse FC 1-0 thanks to a goal in the first minute from Daniel Green as the St Ann team continued to dominate the league and picked up their 20th win of the season.
Reid scored in the 81st and 85th minutes for Arnett Gardens who led 3-0 at half time, scoring in back-to-back games and taking his tally to five on the season. Jamone Shephard scored the opening goal in the 31st minute, Jaheim Thomas doubled the advantage in the 38th minute before Warner Brown made it 3-0 in the 41st minute, extending his league leading tally to 16 goals.
Jourdain Fletcher scored two minutes after he came on the field in the second half to give Montego Bay United a 1-0 win over Harbour View at the Montego Bay Sports Complex and give coach Paul ‘Tegat’ Davis his first win this season.
Tajay Grant scored in the 51st minute as Racing United edged Dunbeholden FC 1-0 in the first game of the double header at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex, snapping their three-game winning run. Racing joined Waterhouse FC on 37 points but trail on goal-difference for the sixth and final spot in the play-offs.
Humble Lion edged up to 21 points and 13th place after they held on to beat Tivoli Gardens at Effortville Community Centre as Stephen Barnett scored a double. Afiba Chambers gave Humble Lion the lead in the 45th minute and Barnett got his first in the 70th minute before Janoi Williams pulled a goal back for Tivoli in the 73rd minute. Barnett completed his double in the 76th minute to give Humble Lion a 3-1 lead before Roshawn Oldfield scored in the 83rd minute to cut the deficit to one goal.
