Including Your Beloved Pet!
For many couples, pets are more than just animals — they’re cherished members of the family. Whether it’s a playful pup, a loyal cat, or another beloved pet, it’s only natural that you’d want them to be part of your big day.
For many Jamaican couples, having pets at the wedding isn’t always practical — whether it is due to venue restrictions or just the general hustle and bustle of a busy wedding day. I have however, planned weddings where the dog has been a ring bearer, and where a horse was included in the couple’s photoshoot. This is definitely not for every couple; and including your beloved pet can become a reality without the animal being physically present at the wedding. Here’s how:
Include Them in Your Stationary or Digital Messaging
One of the easiest ways to include your pet is by featuring them on your wedding stationery or digital content. Add a picture of your pet to your invitations or save-the-date cards or consider having their face on other paper elements like menu cards, napkins, or place settings. This is a subtle yet meaningful way to honour your pet without having them physically present.
Pet-Inspired Cake-Toppers
A wedding cake is a true centrepiece of the celebration, so why not make it extra special by including your pet in a fun way? You can opt for a custom-made cake topper featuring you, your partner, and your pet in miniature form. Whether it’s a dog, cat, or any other animal, it’s sure to make guests smile and give your cake a whimsical, personal touch. Be sure that you see the cake-topper before the wedding day so there are no surprises.
Incorporate Their Paw Prints into the Décor
If your pet can’t be physically present, there are still plenty of ways to include them through décor. You could create a beautiful paw-print motif to feature on your aisle runner, guest book, or table settings. This is a lovely and subtle way to include your pet in the wedding, and it’ll be something that guests will notice and appreciate.
A Pet-Inspired Photoshoot
Why not schedule a pre or post-wedding photo shoot that includes them? Capture the moments with your pet in their finest attire — whether it’s a cute collar, a floral wreath, or a mini bow tie. This allows you to make special memories with your pet and have adorable photos to remember the day.
Including Your Pet in the Ceremony
Now, if you envision your pet playing a role at your wedding, consider examples such as: Will your dog be the ring bearer, or perhaps your cat will roll in a wagon as a whimsical flower girl? It’s becoming increasingly popular for couples to have their pets serve as stand-ins for traditional roles like the flower girl or ring bearer. You can dress them up in a cute bow tie, floral wreath, or even a top hat for a memorable moment during the ceremony. Be sure to have someone on hand to capture this picture-perfect moment — it’s bound to be a highlight!
As with the rest of your bridal party, it’s essential that your pet looks their best. Schedule a grooming session before the wedding to ensure they look (and smell) great. You want your pet to shine just as brightly as the rest of the family when they’re on display for your guests!
Pet Precautions
Incorporating your pet into your wedding day will require some extra planning and preparation. First and foremost, be sure to check with your venue about their pet policies. Many venues have strict no-pet policies, so it’s important to confirm ahead of time whether your pet can attend. Additionally, make sure your bridal party is on board with the idea and that no one has allergies or fears of your pet(s).
Keep in mind that weddings can be overwhelming for pets, especially if they’re not used to large crowds, flashing lights, or loud music. Receptions, in particular, can be a lot to handle with their lively atmosphere and extensive guest lists. Consider your pet’s temperament and whether they’ll be comfortable in that environment, and the same for your guests. Not everyone likes all animals.
Whether your pet is walking up the aisle, gracing your invitations, or showing up in adorable photos, there are countless ways to include them in your wedding. After all, they’re not just pets — they’re part of your love story, and your big day wouldn’t be complete without them. So get creative and find ways to celebrate them in a way that’s both fun and memorable!
