Escapee facing gun charges
ST MARY, Jamaica- A man who escaped lockup has been hit with five more charges following a shootout with police.
Twenty-two-year-old Nolando Atkinson of Boscobel Heights, St Mary is facing charges of shooting with intent, possession of a prohibited weapon, unauthorised possession of ammunition, using a firearm to commit a felony, and assault at common law following an incident in Wood Park, in the parish on March 7.
Reports from the Port Maria police are that about 6:10 pm lawmen conducted a raid in the community of Wood Park, in search of wanted men said to be escapees from the Oracabessa police station.
Two men were seen on a premises, and one allegedly opened fire at the police. The team returned fire.
During the encounter Atkinson got hit to the lower left leg which resulted in him falling to the ground. The other man managed to escape.
The injured man who was identified as Atkinson who had escaped custody was assisted to the hospital by the police where he was treated and later taken back into custody.
On Saturday Atkinson was formally charged for the offences following a question and answer interview.
His accomplice is still on the run and is being urged to turn himself in to the police.
A court date for Atkinson is being finalised.
