Portmore United book spot in JPL playoffs
ST CATHERINE, Jamaica – Former champions Portmore United are the fourth team to book their spot in the Jamaica Premier League play-offs after beating Arnett Gardens 2-1 in their third round game played at Ferdie Neita Park on Sunday.
The win saw Portmore United improve to 63 points and join Mt Pleasant FA (78 points), Montego Bay United (69 points) and Arnett (67 points) as the teams that have confirmed their places in the top six.
Cardel Benbow scored his second goal of the season to give Portmore the lead in the 28th minute but Warner Brown scored his 21st goal of the season, from the penalty spot in the 60th minute to draw Arnett level at 1-1. Chevon Watson responded almost immediately to restore Portmore’s lead a minute later. Arnett ended the game with 10 players after Jamone Shepherd was sent off late in the game.
Jalmaro Calvin scored a late double to rescue Cavalier who had to rally late to earn a point from a 2-2 draw against relegation threatened Harbour View at the Harbour View stadium.
Harbour View appeared well on their way to their second win in four games, leading 2-0 with about 15 minutes to go before Cavalier stormed back to earn a point. DeJuan Green scored in the 17th minute to give Harbour View the lead before Andre Fagan doubled the lead two minutes into time added in the first half.
Calvin halved the deficit when he scored his 17th goal of the season in the 76th minute, then carried them all the way back when he scored deep into time added at the end of the second half.
Waterhouse FC held on to sixth place after a second straight 1-0 win, edging Humble Lion thanks to a second half goal from Shamarie Dallas. They are on 52 point, one point ahead of Tivoli Gardens who came from a goal down to beat last placed Vere United.
Tyreek Magee gave Vere an early lead when he scored in the seventh minute but Kimarley Smith drew Tivoli level in the 27th minute. Barrington Pryce scored the winner in the 68th minute. Vere played the final 10 minutes of the game plus time added with 10 players as Sean Leighton, who came on the field as a sub in the 78th minute, was red carded in the 80th minute.
Molynes United snapped an eight-game winless run, beating Dunbeholden FC 2-0 with goals from Nickache Murray in the seventh minute and Mickel Graham deep into time added in the second half.
